Eva Noblezada, from North Carolina, has made her stage debut playing the lead role, Kim in Miss Saigon. She was spotted at the age of just 18 in the finals of the National High School Music Theatre Awards and is now one of the biggest stars in the West End. She has since won the 2015 Whatsonstage Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
We spoke to her about her experience so far and got to know her a little bit more...
What is it like to star in one of the greatest musicals of all time?
It’s an absolute blast! I’m very honoured and grateful to be telling such a powerful and timeless story with this talented cast. It really is something special.
Describe Miss Saigon in 3 words
It’s a….romantic, timeless masterpiece.
How did you feel about moving half-way around the world to play the role of Kim?
I was excited! At a very young age I knew exactly what I wanted to do and knew the risks I was willing to take. Even if that meant being away from my family. I just didn’t know it was going to happen this fast. I love London! And as much as I miss my family and friends I am here doing what I love and I couldn’t be more thankful.
What is your favourite scene in the musical?
Hard question! I love Sun and Moon because you get to witness Kim and Chris’s first time appreciating each other body and heart. It’s a beautiful song to sing and so romantic. But I also love the nightmare scene! It’s fast moving and cinematic!
What helps you get into character?
I have a “Saigon playlist” with instrumentals from Memoirs of a Geisha, Pride and Prejudice and some of my favourite artists. I also have a few pictures plastered on my mirror, one of them being the original picture that inspired the composers of the show to create it. And of course, as Kim smells of orange trees, I douse myself with a Satsuma spray from the Body Shop before I leave my dressing room!
If you could be on stage with anyone in the world who would it be?
It was a magical night when I was able to share the stage with the Original Company and also other previous casts of Miss Saigon. That was a dream I couldn't have possibly believed would ever come true. But as for now I’m very much enjoying who I get to perform with night after night!
What would be your dream role?
Oooh I’d love to be Eponine in Les Miserables! Or even Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family haha.
What is your favourite play?
My favourite play is Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. Mind you, I’ve never seen it actually performed other than the movie and I’ve read the book, but it’s one of my favourite scripts! So romantic and contemporary despite the setting it was written in.
What is your favourite thing to do in London?
...shopping! Goodness, I’m so awful I love to shop. I also love flower markets, going to the gym and exploring new areas or galleries I’ve never been before.
Tell us something people don’t know about you
I’ve played so many sports; basketball, BMX, paintball, volleyball and swim team. My basketball team went undefeated for two years straight and a paintball team I was on won the Chicago Young Guns Championship!
