Fan On The Ground: Badly Drawn Boy, Nottingham

We love hearing the first-hand experiences of gig-goers across the country about who they've been to see and why. The latest 'fan on the ground' comes to you from the fair city of Nottingham.

Hello fan on the ground, what’s your name?

Neil Tunnard

Who are you here to see tonight and what’s the venue?

Badly Drawn Boy. It's the first date of the UK 15th anniversary 'The Hour of the Bewilderbeast' tour. I'm at the Rescue Rooms.

Have you got any tips on places to eat or drink pre-gig?

For gigs at the Rescue Rooms or Rock City I like to drink at Spanky Van Dykes - great pub with a student feel. Have often eaten at Yo Sushi in town before a gig in Nottingham as it’s a quick and social way to eat.

Why did you want to come and see Badly Drawn Boy tonight? Have you been a dedicated fan for years?

I’ve never seen him before!!  I wouldn’t say I’ve been a dedicated fan for years but I really like the album ‘The Hour of the Bewilderbeast’ which won the Mercury Music prize. His music was original in his early days so I was interested to see what he would be like live.

What would you say Nottingham’s live music scene is like? Have you had any amazing live music moments in the city?

I believe the music scene in Nottingham is really good - we have some great venues.  The arena pulls in huge artists and bands, and venues such as Rock City, Rescue Rooms and the Bodega attract great acts too. Small places like the Jam Café are great for unknowns to play at. Watching indie bands in the late 90’s at Rock City was always amazing.

Best moment of the evening?

When he was closing out a song and just stopped abruptly.  He stated ‘they hadn’t rehearsed that one’.

Best track of the night?

You Were Right.

Summarise the gig for us in a sentence.

Friendly atmosphere, good sound, overall great gig.
