We chatted with the fabulous, Olivier Award nominated Amy Lennox who told us about what goes on behind the scenes of the dazzling show Kinky Boots, what’s it’s like working with wonderfully talented drag queens and...Star Trek!
3 Olivier wins for Kinky Boots! How does it feel?
It feels wonderful – it’s a dream to be part of this show anyway so I'm very proud of it, and even more so now
What drew you to this role?
I heard through the grapevine that it was coming to town and the part of Lauren was screaming out at me – I’d worked with the creative team before on Legally Blonde and had an amazing time back then so this was a no brainer!
Can you describe Kinky Boots in 3 words?
Inspiring, uplifting, fabulous.
The Angels outdo our heel stomping skills to the max, what is it like working with those amazing drag queens?
I look forward to seeing what makeup look they're going to go for each night - they are all such pros at that now, it’s incredible! And they are such a lovely bunch of incredibly talented performers. It’s not fair that they have legs and bums that look like that…!
Does anyone have any funny/peculiar back stage routines?
Not really! At least, not that I've noticed! I think everyone certainly has some form of a routine that they fall into because you are repeating yourself every night! I’ve fallen into a weird situation where I have to go to the toilet right before my solo – it’s not the best time as I have to run for it but now it has become a thing in my head!
Who is your backstage buddy?
Most of the cast in this show are pretty busy - if we are not onstage we are usually substage in ‘wardrobe village’ getting changed. I tend to be surrounded by the majority of the cast and we all have a great laugh together.
We all loved your solo song ‘The History of Wrong Guys’, it’s hilarious, what’s your favourite song/scene in the show?
I will never tire of performing ‘The History of Wrong Guys’ - I love it. I also could never tire of listening to Lola’s ‘Hold Me in Your Heart’ in Act 2- it made me cry every time in the rehearsal room.
What is your next dream role?
I like working on new material - my dream role may not have been written yet so we shall have to wait and see… I do however dream of being in the next Star Trek movie - I’m a die-hard Trekkie!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Always listen to your gut feeling and never ignore it. Oh, and be thankful for what you have!
What’s your favourite show of all time and why?
It’s usually the one that I’m in at the time - you have such respect for something when you’re in it because you are aware of every aspect of what makes it what it is and the hard work that goes in to making it happen.
