Christmas at the Botanics, Edinburgh: Q&A

With the weather cooling down, the mornings getting frosty and the sun disappearing earlier by the week, we’d forgive you for catching some festive cheer as early as September. Christmas has become such a busy and popular time of year that planning events around it is expected months in advance. But, one event you won’t want to miss out on this year is Christmas at the Botanics; a spectacular light trail set at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, and we spoke to marketing manager, Robert Barton about what makes this event stand out.

The Royal Botanic Garden is a beautiful place to host a festive event, but what made you decide on Edinburgh?

We are working with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh as it is a truly stunning, world class garden. After our success with Christmas at Kew - which we have presented at the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew - for over four years and Christmas at Blenheim - in the stunning formal gardens of Blenheim Palace - it is a privilege to bring the magic of our illuminated trails north of the border!

The event is new this year, and it’s already looking popular, but what are you most looking forward to?

We’ll be bringing so many lovely moments to the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh with Christmas at the Botanics and visitors will be able to enjoy an enchanted Crystal Lawn in addition to the hypnotic beauty of a flickering, scented Fire Garden. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Choirs of the Trees, a woodland grove of ‘singing’ conifers – it really will be very special.

Although very simple, it is always lovely to see the enjoyment of families as they toast marshmallows in the fire pits. This is always enjoyed by young and old alike!

Often Christmas events can be more suited to kids than adults, is that the case with Christmas at the Botanics or will it be fun for any age?

The wonderful thing about Christmas at the Botanics is that it is suitable for all the family and can absolutely be enjoyed if you are just coming with a group of friends: from looking out for Santa if you are with your family to enjoying our delicious mulled wine if you are with your friends.

If you had to describe the event in three words, what would they be?

If I had to describe it in 3 words, then they would be: festive, magical and fun.

With the event running from the 24th November right the way up until the 30th December, you’re bound to find a date and time that suits you. The trails can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on what you make of it. It suits families looking for a quick Christmassy adventure before their pantomime, or a group of friends hoping for a festive evening out.
