We spoke to reality royalty Joey Essex, star of The Only Way Is Essex, Just Tattoo Of Us, Educating Joey Essex and more, who will be starring at the event alongside Geordie Shore queen Charlotte Crosby, about all things reality TV.
First of all, congratulations on being part of MTV Reality Con, it looks really exciting!
I know! Its good because it’s the first one that’s been done, the first one worldwide as well. It will definitely be exciting, always good to do something new.
Oh definitely! What are you most looking forward to at MTV Reality Con?
I’m just looking forward to the excitement and the buzz that’s going to be there. There’s going to be so many fans, its quite nice to meet fans in a nice environment, where fans are actually excited. I meet a lot of fans when I’m in clubs and sometimes they're too excited because they're drunk but it's going to be loads of honest and loyal fans which is exciting for me.
What can the people attending Reality Con expect to see there?
Me and Charlotte Crosby are headliners for the event and the best way to describe it is that it'll be a AAA pass backstage to see what we see. I mean you see some behind the scenes on social media, but to see it in real life is completely different and quite exciting and I feel like a lot of fans and people would be excited to see that. You can see the sets for Just Tattoo of Us, the Geordie Shore house – it’s like a museum of reality TV – and of course me and Charlotte are going to be there!
Throwing it back to the beginning, did you have any idea of how much TOWIE was going to launch you into this massive world of celebrity?
I didn't have a clue to be honest. Going into TV wasn't something I thought I was going to make money from or get famous from it, I didn’t really understand any of it. There wasn’t even a risk really, I just took an opportunity and didn’t expect any money or fame - I never wanted to be famous - I did it because I was out of work.
I just took the opportunity and it worked for me, I never took it too seriously, I still don’t. I feel like that's why I’m successful as well, because of the timing and things like that, I generally believe it’s because I took it as fun and had fun with it which I still do, and I think that’s why I’m so successful with what I do.
Did you expect reality TV to take off so massively?
Not really, you wouldn’t think all these reality TV shows would start happening. Even when Geordie Shore came out, you’d think 'nah' and everything thought TOWIE wouldn't work or Geordie Shore or Made in Chelsea, everything thought like that and it ends up working because they're exciting and real.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Once every couple of months I’ll be on some sort of morning TV programme, whether it's This Morning, Good Morning Britain, Lorraine etc. I’ve done Good Morning Britain, This Morning and Lorraine all within the space of 2 months. I’ve always got some sort of TV programme coming out.
I’m not in training because I’ve been working so hard on TV shows, but I do like to keep fit, stay healthy and have my own space. Sometimes spend some time on Instagram which is ridiculous and hang around with mates and get a Nandos.
Going back to your career, you've achieved so much already including Celebrity MasterChef. Is there anything that you’d really like to do in the future?
There are a few ideas. I’ve done a lot of reality TV and I want to do more personal stuff, more about me and opening up - I’m 30 next year! I’ve done a few TV shows ready for next year so regardless of what happens next year that's done, and it’ll show a different side to me.
Not a lot of people see me being me on TV, you only see me on Celebs Go Dating, Celebrity Juice...so there are a few big shows that really show who I am and next year's going to be a big year for me!
As I’m sure you’re aware, I’m A Celebrity... is well underway at the minute. Looking back at your time, is there anything that you wish you had done differently?
I was very close to sneaking something in like salt and pepper, maybe some Peri-Peri seasoning, or floss. I wish I had sneaked whatever it was in because I think if I went to the dunny, I could have gotten away with it
Them sort of shows though, you just got to go for it. Don’t get me wrong there are things that I wish I had done, but like any TV show you do, I don't have any regrets with anything I've done and always try to do my best at anything I've ever done on TV. I think that comes across as well.
Here at See Tickets we are massively into our music and gigs, so who are you listening to at the minute?
I go through phases of music, sometimes I’ll listen to pop, sometimes I’m into a bit of rap and sometimes I’m into house. Rap wise I listen to Fredo, pop I listen to Dua Lipa – she’s quite cool, and house music I like Darius Syrossian.
What’s your go to karaoke song?
I don’t know why this song has come to mind but 'YMCA' – absolute banger!
Would you do that solo or get everyone up to be part of it?
I'd do it on my own, stand up on the table and everything! Last time I ever did karaoke I was with Ant and Dec. We had a little drink together and was singing karaoke songs. I remember singing 'Sweet Like Chocolate' with them.
Who is your reality TV hero?
I would say myself! That's a hard question. Actually, Keith Lemon!
Charlotte Crosby chose The Kardashians, you should have a word with her about why she didn’t choose you...
Yeah, it's a liberty mate. I would have said her, but you know.
