5 Minutes With James Gillespie

We took some time to chat with English born, Scottish raised singer-songwriter, James Gillespie. In less than a month after the release of his debut track, James attracted global attention that saw 'What You Do' hit number 7 on the UK Viral Spotify charts with over 500,000 monthly streams. Find out what he's been doing to keep himself busy during isolation, how it felt performing with P!nk, his live appearances on socials and more!

Are there any other artists past or present who have inspired your music?

So many! Kurt Cobain, Citizen Cope, John Mayer, James Blake and Bon Iver to name a few!

How did it feel performing alongside iconic artist P!nk on her 2017 tour?

It was INSANE. We didn’t even do a soundcheck before we played. She just wanted to feel it out on stage and told me to play it however I wanted. I think the biggest show I did before then was about 500 people – so going from that to 20,000 was a big jump. She’s just the most awesome, lovely person in the world. Not to mention crazy talented.

What song(s) are you looking forward to singing the most at your upcoming shows?

I think 'Rescue Me'. I haven’t played it live yet and can’t wait to feel it with people in front of me. It changes the song so much! That and 'Love Lost'. It’s so gentle and painful. I’ve never done it live but I think this year I’m going to break it out. Let's see how the crowd feel...

Are there any venues or cities you’re looking forward to playing the most?

To be honest, all of them. I can’t wait to get back on the road. I travel all the time and miss it so much! I can’t wait to visit everyone. Cologne was amazing last time, Budapest as well. But I’ll always have soft spots for places I’ve lived like Spain, France etc.

What can your fans expect from your upcoming tour? Do you have any new music in the pipeline?

I actually have a full album in the pipeline. Hahahaha. I think I’ll be playing about 70% first album and 30% new stuff. I’ve also got a new cover song that I cant wait to break out too. 😉

What would be your dream festival to headline?

I mean. It has got to be Glastonbury... right? The crazy thing is that I’ve never actually been! There has always been something going on or I’m out of the country! So, getting there and playing as my first visit would just be a dream.

Some of us at See Tickets (not naming any names here...) have admitted they’d rather eat dessert before their main meal if it was socially acceptable. Do you have any unpopular opinions?

Hahahahah. I couldn’t do that. I would need to eat dessert, main then another dessert. Erm… Cheese and chocolate... like – together. I know it's fucked up but I’ve done it a few times and it’s just crazy delicious. Also – cheese and honey. I have no idea why. And I have no idea why I even tried it. But damn!

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

So tricky. But probably macaroni cheese. No, wait – Fajitas. Yeah, Fajitas. Or chilli con carne. Ugh. What are you doing to me? Man, I’m hungry...

How have you been keeping yourself busy during this time? Do you have any hobbies?

I’ve been writing! Luckily my hobby is also part of my job. To be honest, a lot of my hobbies are outdoors; snowboarding, travelling etc. but I still get to draw, strum, sing, play Fortnite and design my next 100 tattoos hahaha. So, I’m keeping pretty busy. Plus, I’m going live a lot on socials which is crazy fun. Like I said, keeping busy.

I’m not sure if this is the end or if I’m missing one question… but thanks for your time guys! Let’s do it again ASAP xxxxx

You can catch James live this October! And don't forget to keep up with his live appearances on socials here.
