The MOBO Awards are the UK’s biggest celebration of Black music and culture, and this year they will be taking place on the 5th December in Coventry. The nominees were announced yesterday for each of the categories, including 'Album of the Year', 'Best Newcomer', this years new category 'Best Drill Act', and many more. Dave and Arlo Parks lead the nominations, but with so many incredibly talented musicians amongst the nominees it is difficult to predict the winners.

DAVEDave

Following the release of his acclaimed sophomore album 'We're All Alone In This Together', rapper Dave has topped the nominations at the MOBO's, competing in 5 categories, including 'Album of the Year'! He will be going on tour in February next year, tickets are selling fast so get yours now!

 

 

 

 

Ghetts

Where? Manchester & Birmingham

2021 has been an impressive year for Ghetts. Having been nominated for a Mercury Prize for his third studio album 'Conflict Of Interest', he has now been nominated for 'Best Male Act', 'Album of The Year', and 'Best Grime Act' at the MOBO's. Last remaining tickets to see him this month in Manchester and Birmingham!

 

 

 

Headie One

When? November 2021

Where? Nationwide 

Headie One released his debut album ‘Edna’ last year in the October of 2020. The album pays homage to his mum, Edna Adjei. Having your debut album nominated for a MOBO album of the year award is no small feat, yet Headie One has earned three nominations this year; 'Album of the Year', 'Best Male Act' and the new category 'Best Drill Act'. You can catch Headie One on tour across the UK in November 2021.

 

 

 

Arlo Parks

When? June 2022

Where? Live At Leeds In The Park, Temple Newsam

'Collapsed in Sunbeams' is Arlo Parks' debut album, and a truly remarkable record. Not only did she win the Mercury Prize for the album, but the MOBO's have now nominated her for 'Album of The Year', 'Best Newcomer', and 'Best Female Act'. Despite being considered a newcomer, Arlo Parks has taken 2021 by storm and we can't wait to see how her music career continues to flourish.

 

 

 

Little SimzLittle Simz

When? November-December 2021

Where? Nationwide

It’s no surprise that Little Simz has received three MOBO Award nominations ('Best Female Act', 'Video of the Year' and 'Best Hip-hop Act'). Her latest studio album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’ was released to critical acclaim and is full of the experimental rap we know and love her for! CelesteCeleste

When? March 2022

Where? London and Birmingham

Another fast rising star amongst this list, Celeste has already received recognitions from the Mercury Prize, The Brits, BBC Sounds and now the MOBOs. With comparisons to the greats like Amy Winehouse, Billie Holiday and Adele, she is a unique, 'once-in-a-generation talent' (NME). Very limited tickets remaining to see her in London and Birmingham next year.

Scoring a support slot on Leicester's Easy Life's 'Life's a Beach' current tour has certainly put Berwyn firmly on the map and he shows no signs of slowing down with the release of his latest single 'MIA' hitting the shelves just yesterday. Bugzy MaloneBugzy Malone

Bugzy Malone’s self-proclaimed ‘Evolution of Grime’ sound has earned him Mobo nominations for ‘Best Grime Act’, and ‘Song of the Year’ for his feature on the remix of Body by Tion Wayne & Russ Millions. ChipChip

UK grime heavyweight Chip is one of the country’s most diverse MCs, and now entering what he calls the “third stage” of his career, it’s evident that Chip continues to evolve. After winning the MOBO for 'Best Grime Act' back in 2016, he has now been nominated for it once again. You can catch him on tour in April next year, grab your tickets now!

M1llionz burst onto the scene in 2019 with sound influenced from his Jamaican roots and earlier this year dropped debut mixtape ‘Provisional License’, featuring from other MOBO nominees, Headie One and AJ Tracey. M1llionz has secured himself two nominations this year: 'Video of the Year' for his single ‘LAGGA’ as well for 'Best Drill Act'. Catch M1llionz as he performs at EartH (Hall) in London, later this month!

 

 

 

D Double ED Double E

Where? Multiple Cities

Another nominee for 'Best Grime Act', D Double E began his career in the Jungle and Garage scene in the 90s and has since been part of a Drum and Bass collective and his Grime collective Newham Generals. Cited as an inspiration for some of the biggest names in the scene Dizzee Rascal and Skepta, D Double E is one of the key figures in the MC Grime scenes. Catch him on tour this December!

Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems,  has already been ranked number 1 on the Billboard Next Big Sound chart and number 5 on the Billboard Emerging Artist chart earlier in May this year. With over 6 million monthly listeners on Spotify and featuring on the incredible tune 'Essence' with global icon Justin Bieber, we're sure she's going places so be sure to watch this space. D Block EuropeD-Block Europe

The hip-hop collective consisting of Young Adz and Dirtbike LB released their debut studio album 'The Blue Print - Us Vs Them'  late last year and saw the duo raise their game musically, lyrically and creatively. They already have a Brit and NME award nominations under their belt, and now they can add MOBO to the list to having been nominated for 'Best Hip-Hop Act' competing against the likes of Little Simz and Dave.

 

 

 

 

Enny

When? March 2022

Where? Manchester, London and Birmingham

Enny is the rapper, singer and songwriter who rose to fame from her 2020 single 'Peng Black Girls' which gained popularity following a remix version with Jorja Smith. This year the 26 year old has been nominated for 'Best Newcomer' amongst the likes of Arlo Parks, Joy Crookes and Berwyn. She is supporting SABA on his headline tour in March 2022 - get your tickets now!

 

 

 

 

Unknown TUnknown T

Where? London, Birmingham, Nottingham and Manchester.

Nominated in this years new category 'Best Drill Act', Unknown T is the 22 year old who has been taking the drill scene by storm, and back in 2018 his debut single 'Homerton B' was the first ever drill song to be certified Silver in the UK. He has since propelled to the forefront of the UK music scene, and his latest album 'Adolescene' released in July of this year has cemented his position as a force in Drill. Catch him live in December this year!

 

 

 

 

Jacob Collier

When? June 2022

Where? Nationwide

Jacob Collier released his debut album ‘In My Room’, which he recorded entirely from the back room of his family home in 2016, followed by ‘Djesse’, a four volume, 50 song album featuring over two dozen artists and ensembles. Nubiyan TwistNubiyan Twist

Where? Bristol, Hertford and Huddersfield

Nubiyan Twist released their self-titled debut album back in 2015. This year, the jazz collective have been nominated for a MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act following the release of latest album ‘Freedom Fables’. The album consists of a medley of genres including jazz, soul, world and Latin. They’re also performing on 3 dates of February 2022. Make sure to get your tickets while you can!

 

 

 

Alfa MistAlfa Mist

Multi-instrumentalist, rapper and producer Alfa Mist released his recent album 'Bring Backs' earlier this year, it is a complex  album which explores his upbringing in a beautifully composed musical form. Off the back of this, he has received a well earned nomination for 'Best Jazz Act', a nomination he will no doubt continue to be nominated for over the years with his music continually surprising us. Emma Jean ThackrayEmma-Jean Thackray

Where? Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Hull, Liverpool, Cardiff and Birmingham.

Just last month, Emma-Jean saw her dreams realised as she took home UK Jazz Act Of The Year Award at the Jazz FM music awards 2021 and we can't help but agree with their choice. Her unique ability to mix and match a kaleidoscope of sounds never fails to have the audience not only in complete awe, but unknowingly foot-stomping to every beat.
