Back To The 90s! The Best Upcoming Shows From 1990s Artists

back to the 90s

Baggy clothes, Beanie Babies and Tamagotchi's galore. It doesn't really seem like the 90s were that long ago, which is why when a well known favourite like 'One Week' by Barenaked Ladies or 'I Want It That Way' by the Backstreet Boys turns up on an 'Old But Gold' playlist it causes a unique, but very real pain in our hearts.

Fortunately, the music of the 90s is alive and well. Artists like James are stronger than ever, releasing a new album earlier this year, and you can still get your fill of pop punk crowd pleasers with Slam Dunk Festival and bands like Less Than Jake.

From Britpop to hip-hop, and ska to classic rock, there's a familiar 90's favourite for everyone today. Find out who you can catch at these upcoming shows!

PixiesPixies

The crunchy guitar of the 90s we all know and love. Their sound from debut album 'Surfer Rosa' (1988) which features the haunting 'Where Is My Mind', and follow up album 'Doolittle' (1989), made famous with tracks like 'Debaser' and 'Here Comes Your Man' seemed to serve as the blueprint for acts like Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins and the classic 90s grunge sound. Don't miss out on your chance to catch the Pixies live!

90s hip-hop at it's best, Arrested Development are known for their Afrocentric hip-hop and positive messages woven throughout their tracks. Simply Red simply red

Turn on the radio in 1995 and there was a good chance that Simply Red's 'Fairground' would be spinning. The single's Latin inspired percussion and ambient chorus saw that no dance floor was left empty, and that you would be circling the track in your head for weeks to come. Even before 'Fairground', Simply Red's fourth studio album 'Stars' dominated the charts, being the highest sold album for 2 years running in the UK and Europe.

less than jakeLess Than Jake

Ska punk heavyweights Less Than Jake are back with a UK tour next year after releasing their ninth studio album 'Silver Linings' in 2020. Fans of Less Than Jake back in the day probably have fond memories of small venues, and energetic performances (both from the band and the crowd). The band's discography includes 'Losing Streak' (1996) and 'Hello Rockview' (1998), home of the single 'All My Best Friends Are Metalheads'. The pop punk/brass combo has never sounded so good.

Bryan Adams

Technically, Bryan Adams rose to fame in the 1980's with the release of 'Reckless' (1984), but his presence in the 90's charts is too strong to be denied. It's hard to get more 90s than with a power ballad like '(Everything I Do) I Do It For You' (1991). Let's not forget his duet with Barbara Streisand, 'I Finally Found Someone' (1996). Bryan Adams has been consistently releasing albums since 1999, with three reaching number 1 in Canada, and most reaching the top 10 in the UK!

Barenaked Ladies barenaked ladies

It's hard not to have a visible reaction when you hear the signature 'it's been' at the start of 'One Week' (1998) by Barenaked Ladies and rightly so. Their catchy pop rock and hip-hop combination is the perfect recipe for a song that you wont realise you're humming until you're already doing it. Their breakthrough album 'Stunt' (1998) sold over an impressive 4 million units by the end of it's first chart run. Don't miss out on a chance to see Barenaked Ladies live!

James

James were a significant part of the 'Madchester' movement back in 1990 with the release of their studio album 'Gold Mother' (1990). Their album 'Laid' (1993) features the single by the same name which was suitably chosen to be the theme song for classic 90's film 'American Pie'. The album not only peaked at number 3 in the UK, but also broke the band into the U.S through it's airtime on college radio. James are playing shows this year and next!

placeboPlacebo

Placebo released their self titled debut album in 1996 at the height of the Britpop era. The album featured controversial track 'Nancy Boy' which in true punk fashion caused a stir with the British press by discussing taboo topics for the time such as drug use and sexuality. Vocalist and guitarist Brian Molko stated 'A song this rude should not be number four in the charts.' (Select magazine). The band also caught the attention of David Bowie and even collaborated with the icon on track 'Without You I'm Nothing'. Catch Placebo as they tour the UK next year in 2022!

Slam Dunk Festival

Whilst Slam Dunk festival itself was founded in 2007, it has been where the 90's alternative scene could call home, hosting bands in the past such as New Found Glory, Reel Big Fish, and Less Than Jake.  This year, Slam Dunk 2022 is welcoming 90's punk staples Rancid to the headline spot. Whilst Rancid found success in '94 supporting skate punk band The Offspring, their breakout success came with release of studio album '...And Out Come the Wolves' which featured the classic 'Ruby Soho'. Early Bird tickets for Slam Dunk 2022 are available until 31st December 2021.
