Sunday (28th August) evening saw the MTV Video Music Awards 2022 take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, with fans and viewers being able to enjoy great performances from likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lizzo and Bad Bunny from the comfort of their home as well as Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Jack Harlow and others taking home prizes. We could not let the VMA’s go by without taking a trip down memory lane and looking back at some of the most iconic moments to date to happen at previous ceremonies.
Beyonce revealing she’s pregnant with Blue Ivy
Back in 2011, Queen B took the VMA’s stage for a performance of her bop ‘Love on Top’, little did the crowd and everyone watching at home know that she was about to reveal that she was pregnant with her first child. As the performance drew to a close, the iconic moment that fans will never forget happened – she held her stomach to reveal she was pregnant.
With the recent release of her house infused album, ‘Renaissance’ dropping to an incredible reception, we wonder if Beyonce will be back on stage any time soon. We’ll be watching closely.
Kanye West Interrupting Taylor Swift’s Acceptance Speech
Award shows are sometimes no strangers to a bit of drama and the 2009 awards ceremony gave us an iconic moment that’s hard to forget – Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s speech as she accepts an award. It is one of the most played out moments in pop culture, as Taylor began her acceptance speech upon winning ‘Best Female Video’, the rapper jumped on stage to explain why Beyonce deserved the accolade instead. As the moment that started a long time feud between the pair we had to include it in our top VMA’s moments.
Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress
You can bet you’ll find some flamboyant outfit choices at any award ceremony but never did anyone think we’d see one made entirely out of meat… Step in Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMA’s. The outfit choice definitely made an impact on everyone and always sticks out as an outfit to remember and so had to be an iconic VMA’s moment. The garment even went on to be displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Madonna’s Wedding Dress Moment
A performance and outfit choice that looks quite tame nowadays but back in 1984 when Madonna took the VMA’s stage for the first time to perform her hit ‘Like a Virgin’ her outfit choice certainly turned heads. She donned a pristine white wedding dress for the song causing a lot of controversy at the time and adding herself to the list of legendary VMA moments.
On Stage Fiasco
Picture the moment… it’s the 2000 VMA’s ceremony and Rage Against The Machine’s bassist Tim Commerford has attempted to bring the whole ceremony to halt by climbing on top of the stage set during Fred Durst’s acceptance speech. Why? Because he was upset about the bands loss to Limp Bizkit for Best Rock Video. A chaotic moment on stage but another that’s cemented itself as an iconic one on the list.
Britney Brings A Snake On Stage
What could arguably be the most iconic moment of all the Video Music Awards ceremonies took place at the 2001 ceremony. The iconic pop star, Britney Spears, took the stage with her jungle inspired performance of ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ little did we know she was about to bring a snake on stage with her. Wrapped around her shoulders Britney carried on with her performance and cemented herself in the VMA’s iconic moments hall of fame.
It's not an awards ceremony if something iconic doesn’t happen and we’re sure looking forward to seeing what else is added to these iconic moments lists!
