Artist Spotlight: CMAT

Dublin singer-songwriter Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, known as CMAT, released her acclaimed debut album ‘If My Wife New I’d Be Dead’ earlier this year. The release quickly became a favourite amongst a few of us here at See Tickets, so we wanted to a shine a spotlight on this incredible artist to anyone who hasn’t checked her out yet.

Back in 2020, she released her debut single ‘Another Day (kfc)’ which gave us a glimpse into the world of CMAT. In short, it’s a breakup song that talks about crying in KFC with some chicken and a diet coke. What might sound like a trivial topic to some, CMAT’s skill is writing and singing about the minutia of situations, colouring in her songs with tiny details that paint a whole experience and emotion.

Her further releases like ‘I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby’ and ‘Rodney’ further cemented her ability to balance emotional depth and humour with ‘unnerving clarity’ (NME), all encased within her country-tinged sound with a pop-centric melodic sensibility.

Once her debut album arrived in March this year to critical acclaim, it has been a nonstop in our listening rotation since. While she arrives in full country swing on the first track ‘Nashville’ in CMAT style, the rest of the album is full of surprises. She cleverly nestles in the sounds of pop and indie, which keeps the album fresh and exciting all the way through. It's a fun album which perfectly accompanies a long drive, blasted at full volume.

Some of our standout tracks are ‘No More Virgos’ and ‘Every Bottle (Is My Boyfriend)’, but we'll warn you, they are massive earworms. So prepare to be humming along to the melody all day long.

Catch her live!

Not only is CMAT’s music incredible, but her live performances are second to none. You can experience it for yourself at one of her upcoming live shows this November and December, where she’s stopping at multiple cities across the UK!
