The nights are drawing in, the mornings are darker and the dreaded C word is around the corner - so what better way to try and lift our spirits than by a Winter Special edition of our 'On Rotation' feature?
We tasked the team with sharing the two tracks that remind them most of winter, not necessarily their favourite Christmas or festive songs - but the ones that are the perfect soundtrack to the colder days.
Check out a few of the picks below and let us know your winter favourites in the comments on our socials!
Elton John - Step Into Christmas
What better way to kick things off than with this all-time classic festive jingle from the frist name announced for Glastonbury 2023 - the legendary Elton John!? Given a new lease of life (not that it was ever slipping away from relevance) by Gavin and Stacey's Christmas special, 'Step Into Christmas' should be a staple of every Christmas playlist and for us, it was the first title on the list. Stone-cold classic.
Frightened Rabbit - It's Christmas So We'll Stop
Described by the late Scott Hutchison as being "about people deciding to be pleasant to one another for about a day, regardless of whether or not they actually get along the rest of the year", this is the perfect track for anyone cynical about 'the magic of Christmas.' Laden with tongue in cheek pokes throughout, the repeated outro of "the next day life went back to its bad self" caps off the brilliant anti-Christmas anthem.
Beabadoobee - Coffee
Beabadoobee's breakout single 'Coffee' is a track that pretty much anyone that has scrolled through social media in the past half-a-decade has DEFINITELY heard. The softly spoken lyrics and delicate instrumentation are the perfect accompaniment for those wintery evenings, and was featured on Powfu's 'death bed (coffee for your head)'.
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York (feat. Kirsty MacColl)
What's December without hearing The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl everywhere you go?! As timeless favourites go, this is one that has certainly stood the test of time. There will always be debates on the 'best' Christmas song, and although impossible to give an objective answer, 'Fairytale of New York' is very rarely outside of the top three. We can't wait for the inevitable karaoke duets this Christmas party season!
The Beatles - Real Love
Everyone's favourite quartet The Beatles have a magnificent discography of tracks for every occasion, but 'Real Love' is the one that reminds us most of the festive period. Covered by Tom Odell for the soundtrack to 2014' John Lewis advert, The Beatles' version saw a resurgence in popularity. As much as we love Odell's cover, the original will always be our favourite.
