Music & happiness are intrinsically linked, and science has shown that happiness makes your brain work better; helping you think more clearly and get more done.
To help beat those January blues we’ve tasked the team with sharing a few of their favourite pick-me-up tracks to give you the ultimate playlist. So, if you’ve been feeling the January blues creep in, try cheering yourself up by playing our beat-the-blues playlist on rotation and let us know what your favourite feel-good song is!
Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere
Michael
It’s fair to say that all of Fleetwood Mac’s songs possess an intangible heavenly quality, but the dreamlike, ethereal sound of ‘Everywhere’ makes it easy to imagine you’re floating away from the troubles of Earth. Whenever you’re feeling weighed down this is a song that will hopefully lighten the load just a little.
Orange Juice - Rip It Up
Izzy
This track is great for when you’re feeling overwhelmed and like you’re not getting anywhere fast. It’s a reminder that you always have the option to just ‘rip it up and start again’, which is especially apt during January; a time when resolutions have been set and you can be hard on yourself if you don’t stick to them. This 80s bop gives you a sense of freedom, it also doesn’t hurt that it’ll have you dancing in no time.
KC & The Sunshine Band – Get Down Tonight
Kiren
If anything flies in the face of January then it's 70s disco. When you can’t even face the thought of getting out of bed, (let alone going out to a club to dance), let KC & The Sunshine Band remind you there are more fun times ahead, you just need to get through January first.
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – The E Street Shuffle
Callum
Packed with saxophone-led funk, snappy lyrics and slick basslines; the opening track to Springsteen’s second record is an all-time favourite when it comes to lifting the mood. I could’ve easily picked ‘Thunder Road’ or ‘Born to Run’ for tracks that inspire you, but for solely good vibes and fun it has to be ‘The E Street Shuffle’.
Primal Scream - Movin' on Up
Abi
I genuinely think it’s impossible to hear this song and not immediately feel your mood lift. It's a timeless classic perfect to whack on full volume on those rainy walks into work, putting a spring into your step that, in the midst of winter, is very hard to come by. With its gospel inspired vocals, iconic guitar riff and uplifting lyrics, this song is guaranteed to ease those January blues (if at least just for those three minutes).
Toni Braxton - He Wasn't Man Enough For Me
Ruby
Making her powerful solo debut in the early 90s, multi-platinum certified and iconic Top Ten pop and R&B/hip-hop artist Toni Braxton has made tremendous waves throughout her career with songs to make you feel all sorts of emotions. 'He Wasn't Man Enough For Me' is one of my personal favourites. This song is sure to break you out of any mellow mood with a beat that makes you want to blast the volume and get up on your feet.
Diana Ross – I’m Coming Out
Karishma
Diana Ross’ 80’s Motown bop ‘I’m Coming Out’ is one that will have you dancing and singing along as soon as the song starts. It’s a soulful song but with that added upbeat buzz - a great tune to start the year, fight the January blues and probably get stuck in your head.
