Double MOBO Award winner and Grammy nominee, British alt-R&B singer-songwriter Mahalia has announced that she will be going on a UK tour across October 2023! The tour is set to follow the July release of her brand new album 'IRL', an album that is a "real reflection of the journey's I've had, what actually happened and a celebration of everyone who got me here", as mentioned by Mahalia herself (DORK).
Naming Erykah Badu and Ms. Lauryn Hill as a couple of her biggest influences, she has been shooting up through the ranks of the R&B scene in recent years. The Leicester-born singer made her recorded debut in her early teens, by which point she had already caught the interest of major record labels. She became signed by Asylum and went on to release 'Diary of Me' (2016) and 'Love and Compromise' (2019), which peaked within the Top 30 of the UK Album Chart. Mahalia has also released a handful of EP's including 'Isolation Tapes' (2020) and 'Letter To Your Ex' (2022).
Terms and Conditions
Mahalia recently dropped her new hit single 'Terms and Conditions'. The single comes from a personal place, with Mahalia stating the song as "a love letter to herself" and "is about placing boundaries in your life, and working around what truly serves you (Clash Magazine, 2023).
In the opening line, she expresses "If you want my love, then let's discuss the man your required to be", and then states the "terms and conditions" of what she expects from a man in a relationship. Here, Mahalia conveys the importance of having certain boundaries in place in a relationship. If not, in her eyes, the bond is sure to break, promoting a strong message for those who struggle to protect themselves from toxic behaviour and have serious conversations.
Across her career, she has won and been nominated for many amazing awards. She won two awards at the 2020 MOBO Awards for Best Female Act and Best R&B/Soul Act, and was nominated for two Brit Awards (2019 and 2020), as well as the Grammy for Best R&B Performance (2021) and many more.
