The National – Conversation 16
Callum
Any song with a chorus of “I was afraid I’d eat your brains” is surely a shoo-in for a Halloween playlist, right?! Whilst The National may be more memorable for brooding lyricism and stunning instrumentation, ‘Conversation 16’ lends itself to the darker humour the band have offered across later records. This is the perfect track for an alternative spooky soundtrack.
Honourable mentions:
Phoebe Bridgers – Halloween
The Gaslight Anthem – Halloween
Real Friends - Mess
New Found Glory – Scarier Than Jason Voorhees At A Campfire
Michael
Is the title of this song a little on the nose for a Halloween blog? Sure, but is it also another example of New Found Glory’s mastery of the genre? Absolutely. This track is chock-full of Halloween references and features a solid hook that will be running through your head for days. It’s also just one example of New Found Glory’s consistency when it comes to churning out bangers, especially considering they’ve been at it for 26 years. And is there anything scarier than the passing of time?
Honourable mentions:
Shakira – She Wolf
My Chemical Romance – Helena
Heart Attack Man - Freak of Nature
Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do
Karishma
Not necessarily your typical Halloween song but the punchy beat of Taylor’s ‘Look What Made Me Do’ definitely knows its intention. As she talks about ‘revenge’ and ‘reinventing’ herself, the almost sonic style beat and rhythm has a fierce energy and attitude about it, one that makes you listen to the lyrics and in my case sing along.
Honourable mentions:
Rihanna – Disturbia
Screaming Jay Hawkins – I Put a Spell on You
Tamino – Crocodile
Will
I think this song reminds me of Halloween more because the album came out in October (2019) than anything, but regardless, there is something about Tamino’s voice that is undeniably haunting and apt for the Halloween season. I always find myself coming back to this album around this time of year.
Honourable mentions:
Andy Shauf – Halloween Store
Matt Kerekes – From None
Billie Eilish – bury a friend
Abi
Singing from the perspective of a monster under the bed, its difficult to deny the spooky vibes on this track - released as the third single from Billie Eilish’s debut album ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go’ back in 2019. The dark and violent lyrics, almost whispering vocals, and synth-pop and electronic production all fuse together to result in a track that masters the sense of something creeping in the shadows.
Honourable mentions:
Skatt Bros - Walk The Night
Kanye West, Jay Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj - Monster
Arctic Monkeys - You’re So Dark
Izzy
Arctic Monkeys 2013 B-side to ‘One For The Road’. ‘You’re So Dark’ is full of dark imagery, mystery, and allure. Reeling off the likes of H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, ravens, murder of crows, catty eyelashes, Dracula capes and cemetery gates all in the first verse. This is surely up there as a top pick for Indie/Alternative Halloween songs.
Honourable mentions:
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Spellbound
Lana Del Rey - Season of the Witch
Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
