Only a month into 2024 and we already have a handful of 'Album of the Year' contenders! Whether it be incredible debuts from the likes of Sprints and Tapir!, or stunning returns from James Arthur and Tom Odell - January has been a haven for new music.
Check out our whistlestop tour of the records we've enjoyed the most this month below.
Sprints - Letter To Self
Over the past year, Dublin four-piece Sprints have become a firm favourite of ours and we've been chomping at the bit for a full-length record to drop. Released on the first weekend of the year, 'Letter To Self' has been on repeat for the past month and we can't see that changing any time soon. Reminiscent of the likes of Savages, Siouxsie and the Banshees and IDLES - it boasts incredible soundscapes from the get-go and translates excellently on the live stage.
With a run of sold out dates already booked in for early 2024, the band head back across the UK this November. Tickets are on sale now but already selling fast!
Tapir! - The Pilgrim, Their God and the King of My Decrepit Mountain
Heavenly Recordings' latest outfit Tapir! have just dropped their mind bending debut album. Following a three-act format and combining the London six-piece's four EPs - the record is a deep dive into the surreal and the adventurous. Soaked in Alt-J-esque ambience and heartfelt fable telling from Ike Gray, Tapir! are certainly ones-to-watch this year.
Don't miss Tapir!'s headline tour across March.
James Arthur - Bitter Sweet Love
Described as "a symphony of sombre tracks coated in powerful musicianship" by Express, James Arthur returns this month with brand new record 'Bitter Sweet Love'. With a sold out arena tour lined up this Spring, it is clear to see the appeal of the Teesside born performer - and 'Bitter Sweet Love' is a sensational return to form.
A limited amount of tickets remain for a string of outdoor shows this summer in Middlesbrough, Bristol, Leeds, Wigan and Swansea.
Marika Hackman - Big Sigh
Lauded as her finest work to date and a combination of the best elements of previous efforts, 'Big Sigh' is a hugely important record for Marika Hackman. Talking of it, Hackman says "This album took a long time to make. It was not easy, and by the time I got to the end of it I was quiet", it was certainly a labour of love - but one that has resulted in a majestic ten-track journey.
Hear 'Big Sigh' live this March at a venue near you - tickets for all shows on sale now!
Tom Odell - Black Friday
Multi award winning, platinum selling favourite Tom Odell is back with sixth album, 'Black Friday'. A heartfelt, melancholy venture across 13 tracks sees Odell do what he does best - brilliantly navigating his ballads with a raw and exposed narrative.
Tom Odell is headlining a huge outdoor show at Alexandra Palace Park this summer, and tickets are on sale now.
