In the ever-evolving music industry, Nadine Shah emerges as a captivating force, weaving together a unique tapestry of sound. With her fifth album, ‘Filthy Underneath’ out next month and UK tour dates in April and May, we’re delving into her music.
Raised in a multicultural environment, Nadine Shah’s early exposure to a variety of musical genres has laid the path for her unique catalogue of work, her distinctive voice setting her apart from others. Her debut album – ‘Love Your Dum and Mad’ – was released nearly 11 years ago. It’s a dark and intense yet powerful debut largely inspired by the tragic loss of two of her friends. Blending elements of jazz, rock, and alternative pop, Shah showcased a fearless approach to genre exploration, earning critical acclaim and establishing herself as a rising star.
Nadine’s heritage – Norwegian Pakistani - is somewhat of a presence in every one of her previous album offerings, whether this be in sound or lyrics and her third record – ‘Holiday Destination’ - particularly echoes this. With the songs almost recorded in a monotone, quieter voice all whilst still showcasing Shah’s powerful tone. The album was nominated for a Mercury Prize award in 2018, the year after release.
Fast forward to the end of February 2024 and Nadine Shah will be dropping her fifth album. Having already released three singles from the album, ‘Topless Mother’ - the lead, which went straight onto the BBC 6Music A-List, ‘Twenty Things’ and the most recent 'Greatest Dancer', the full album already shows promise of being an exciting one. ‘Filthy Underneath’ chronicles a period of unprecedented turbulence in Nadine Shah’s life. And yet, the experience of listening to it is oddly life-affirming – a parade of ghosts spanning the entirety of Nadine’s thirty-seven years, moving with balletic beauty to the music that Nadine and long-time co-writer and producer Ben Hillier have created around them, with renewed emphasis on placing melody and movement front and centre.
