Since releasing their debut album 'Reeling' earlier this year, The Mysterines have been busy touring America and have recently been announced as support for Arctic Monkeys in May and June next year, alongside The Hives. The four-piece band from Liverpool are one to watch, their sound has been compared to 90s-rock staples like Hole, Queens of the Stone Age, and Nirvana.
We caught up with the band ahead of their show at O2 Forum Kentish Town, London in December.
Check out the full interview below.
Your debut album has been out for a few months now, what would you say were your biggest influences for it?
In the words of William Blake, ‘Innocence and Experience’… and a lot of the latter.
Did you feel any pressure working with Fiction records or an expectation to sound like their roster (e.g. The Maccabees, The Cure, etc.)
I don’t think pressure would be the way to describe it, no. We’re really grateful to share a roster with some really successful bands and bands that we love like The Cure, Tame Impala.
Do you have a favourite track on the album to perform live?
The Confession Song is one we all really enjoy. I enjoy telling the story on stage.
Before a show, I like to connect with my inner self, so whatever that means on that day is what I do. Without getting too spiritual about it, I like to remind myself of the importance of the songs, the stories, and the emotions … and do my best to channel that.
What advice would you give to a band starting out?
Everything you think shouldn’t work, try it. The things you know you can do doesn’t always mean you should do them.
If you were going to do anything else but be in a band, what would it be?
Trapeze artist.
You’ve been super busy touring this year and still are in the midst of it, how are you finding America?
We love being over in America. It’s always great for us.
Are you currently working on anything new, if so, what’s inspiring you?
Everything inspires me. I’m lucky enough to be inspired by things most days. Whether it’s things I’ve seen, people I’ve spoken to, or stuff I’ve read or watched… this all contributes to writing and making a new record.
What can we expect to see from The Mysterines going forward?
More hell-raising.
