Singer-songwriter, performer and artist Lyra is one of the most striking talents to have emerged from Ireland in the past few years. From supporting Westlife to blowing away festival crowds, she has established herself on both the domestic and international stage with a string of exciting, vibrant singles accompanied by a unique style of visual presentation that is never less than stunning.
Lyra is heading on a UK tour in April this year and we caught up with her to discuss music, touring and more. Take a read of the full interview below!
First of all, if somebody is completely new to you, how would you describe your music?
I would describe it as powerful, anthemic, ambient, ethereal and full of passion. Above all it’s my life, all my songs I write about are true to life and experiences I have went through.
Is there one song of yours you’d recommend people listen to if they are new and why?
It would have to be “Falling”. I’m going to be playing a lot of new unreleased music, so these shows are going to be a really special moment for both me and the audience.
You released your latest single ’29 Box’ last year, how did the song come about? Did anything influence the track?
I wrote this song at home on my own in my pyjamas, after giving myself a very hard time comparing myself to things I was seeing on social media. I didn’t feel good enough, some days it was in my music, some days it was my looks, and I thought it was time for me to share this vulnerable side with my fans. Most people see me on stage and think I am oozing with confidence, but some days that’s not true, just like everyone else I have my insecurities.
I wanted to send the message that not everything you see online is real, and we all need to start accepting ourselves for who we really are. Be kind to yourself.
From supporting some great artists and bands to having your songs featured on huge shows like Love Island, a bit of a toughie but has there been one moment of your career that’s stood out the most?
Getting my song placed on Greys Anatomy was a very cool moment for me. I love the show and always thought the music was next level, so to have little me have a song on it and used for the entire session promotion was class.
Being Irish and asked to write for Riverdance the animation movie was also pretty wicked, along with being booked to play Isle of Wight as it’s one of my favourite festivals.
Excitingly, you’re heading out on your first UK tour this April, what can we expect from the tour?
Getting to know me and what my music is about. I love sharing my journey with the audience and letting them get to know the side to me you can’t show on Spotify. You can expect some songs that you may relate to, some bad dancing, some probably inappropriate outfits and a bloody great night.
What are you looking forward to the most about being on the road?
Meeting new fans. I feel like on stage is where I really come alive. There is no hiding up there, you can sing or you can’t and I find it so exciting going out on stage knowing it’s just me and the audience and nothing else matters.
Apart from the tour, what else can we look forward to from you in 2023?
NEW MUSIC AND PLENTY OF IT!!!!!!!!
